Yes sure. My name is Michael Stausholm, and I am the CEO and founder of SproutWorld.
I was born and raised in Denmark in a small town near Næstved, 1.5 hours drive from the capital of Copenhagen. I was quite adventurous in a place where not much was going on, so I decided to apply for a trainee program after high school. It was offered by Maersk, one of the biggest shipping companies in the world, and the trainee position was far away in Jakarta, Indonesia. The plan was to stay there for 3 years but I ended up living there during 14 years before I returned to Denmark in 2006. In Asia I spent many years working as a consultant for big companies like Nike and Walmart, assisting them in making their productions sites more sustainable. This is where my passion for sustainability started, a passion that remains intact and was the reason why I started up SproutWorld.
I am the CEO of SproutWorld and together with my team I run the business from our office in Copenhagen. Though we are a Danish company, only 3 percent of our sales go to Danish companies. This way you can say that we are a very global company selling worldwide with main markets in Italy, France, Germany, the UK, the US and Spain. 75 percent of our sales are B2B, and 25 are B2C with Amazon as our main marketplace. Business buy the pencils and get them customized with logo and message and use them as green giveaways for events, conferences, campaigns and so on.
I founded SproutWorld back in 2013 when I came across a plantable pencil on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter. I had never seen or heard about a pencil becoming a plant after you have used it up, but the idea really intrigued me. The fact that you use a product and then give it a new life afterwards really resonate with me and a lot of people and companies. I am proud to offer a sustainable alternative to the many plastic filled merchandise products on the market. We are a B Corp certified company which means that we live up to high standards within sustainability, with production sites in both the EU and the US.
In general, I am very proud of being part of SproutWorld because we prioritize both profit and planet. Our plantable pencils are zero waste products and give back to nature when they get planted. Two years ago we purchased an idle piece of land in Poland where our European production is placed, and we planted 12.000 trees – as part of a reforestation project together with the Polish State Forests. It’s one of the non-commercial projects that I am most excited about.
If you have a passion for something and you believe in it, give it a try. But do it with the advice and experience from people that know more than you. Running a sustainable company is not charity, it’s hard core business, so you need to think sustainability the whole way around. If you don’t make money, you don’t survive no matter how green and likeable your company is.
